Billions of Devices with Internet Connection May Be Used for Illegal Mining
March 5, 2018
Devices with Internet connection from security cams to smartphones may be captured by hackers and turned into crypto mining tools.
Avast company staged a demo at the Mobile World Congress where it launched several devices with net connection and crypto mining software. The company has shown the way dozens of thousands of devices can be linked to the net like this and make thousands of dollars in few days.
In theory, a real attack starts with hackers seizing the net of the devices. They will make use of the combined computational capacity of these devices to launch monero-miners on them afterwards.
Despite 1 000 USD may seem little money, potential risks of this hack is tremendous as by 2020 there will be over 20 bln of Internet connected devices, as research company Gartner predicts. Today the figure makes up 5-7 bln.
