July 31, 2018
The largest chain of movie theaters of Thailand Major Cineplex will reportedly implement the possibility to buy tickets and paying in cinema bars with cryptocurrency. The company is building an ecosystem for digital payments in partnership with the Swiss payment company Rapidzpay. Earlier Thai authorities began to regulate the cryptocurrency industry, as the Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand started accepting applications for licenses from cryptocurrency operators.
Major Cineplex was founded in December 1995. The company has 143 movie theaters in Thailand, 43 of which are located in the greater Bangkok area. Major Cineplex also owns movie theaters in Cambodia and Laos. The company plans to expand the number of screens to 1,000 by 2020.
If Major Cineplex will implement crypto payments, customers of the company will be able to pay with cryptocurrency as with traditional money.
Major Cineplex's director of marketing Chanya Tamrongweenichai told Nation Multimedia:
"Rapidzpay will expand to our other businesses and lead the change for Thailand’s financial ecosystem to be cashless. You’ll be able to buy any services and products from us, such as movie tickets, popcorn and other different products with cryptocurrency."
